The final design and machining project was biomimicry. I designed and fabricated a biomechanical heart. The mechanism is called Tourbillon and it is a clockwork mechanism. This includes a heart-shaped centerpiece that rotates with a gear driven by the loaded coil leaf spring. The shaft is supported between two ruby bearings. I designed all the parts on SolidWorks 2023 and machined them using manual and CNC lathe, CNC Mini mill, and Prototrak. The materials used were brass, aluminum, and steel.
I designed and machined all the lathe parts for turning and created CAM files for the mini mill.

Low-Frequency Seismometer Anatomy

Generated Analytical model in MATLAB for Folded Pendulum low-frequency monolithic horizontal seismometer for LIGO-India training lab at Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune.
Developed its mathematical model, CAD design, FEA model, and 2D Part drawings, fabricated it, assembled it, and tested it.
Uniqueness: Adjustable tuning mass in the range of 0.01-0.06 m, Elliptical flexures of 100 microns thickness, provision of interferometric readout, enclosed structure, frequency band of 0.01 to 10 Hz.

Auto-Injector

Designed and developed the trainer device for the Epinephrine Auto-Injector at Pirouette Medical.
Devised its actuation mechanisms and resetting features from scratch. This involved the formulation of a trace matrix, FDA design regulations, ISO standards, user-safe design, design for plastic injection molding, mold flow analysis, and device prototyping using SLA 3D printers.
Tested the auto-injector for design verification activities involving drop test, dose accuracy test, and full device test.
Created programs for CMMs like MicroVu and Keyence and cross-checked the measurements with engineering drawings.

I prepared a Quality Function Deployment (QFD) matrix, performed market and customer surveys, and created a Bill of Material (BOM).

Charpy Impact Test Specimens after testing

Performed tests like tensile, impact, XRD, SEM, hardness, and optical microscopy to compare different properties of AISI 316 at room and cryo temperatures.
A few samples were annealed at high temperatures (1050 deg C) and then cryo-treated (-190 deg C) to compare properties.
The project was done at the Production lab, Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune, India under the guidance of Dr. Rajesh Chaudhari.

Chess Set

We were a group of 2 and designed and manufactured an entire chess set with its pieces and chess board. We used Al 6061 and Brass to make chess pieces and Al 6061 and wood to make a chess board. We used a Haas TL-1 CNC lathe machine for manufacturing chess pieces.
I made all the Pawns, Rooks, and Knights. The chessboard was done using the Water jet process. We used SolidWorks for CAD modeling and MasterCAM for G code for CNC.

Mold Tools
Injection Molded Battle Axes

We were a team of two students and made mold tools and molded parts for the IPD 5010 class.
I designed and performed plastic flow simulations in SolidWorks, used MasterCAM for the CAM file, and machined it on CNC Haas Mini Mill at Precision Machining Lab, UPenn.
After the mold halves were made, we used Morgan Press for plastic injection molding. We made a Battle axe (a toy/keychain) as our molded part out of PP as material.

We built a semi-autonomous car (mobile robot) that used HTC Vive to locate the police car in the arena and push it. It sent UDP to transmit its position on the field and used sensor inputs to navigate autonomously. We were the Runner-up in the competition.
I designed the robot's structure, fabricated PCBs, selected sensors, and tested the robot.

Tested Tensile Test Specimens

This experimental research is about performing a comparative analysis of the tensile strength of the 3D-printed composite material with Onyx as matrix and Carbon Fiber as reinforcement for various layer orientations of Carbon fiber filament.
I found the research gap through the literature survey, decided the parameters for 3D printing the tensile test specimens, and helped with the tensile testing.

Instead of the more commonly used Poly-Si membrane for capacitive microphones, Graphene in combination with PMMA was used.

Designed and fabricated a laptop stand for a heavy laptop. It was fabricated out of Acrylic sheets using a laser cutting process.
The laptop stand is sturdy, portable, and well-ventilated for heavy-duty laptops, and has a mouse pad with a provision for angle adjustment.

Developed and prototyped a rotating refrigerator organizer to save space and organize food. This also has transparent side compartments made of acrylic sheets to fit around the rotating organizer.
Rotating movement makes it easy to keep track of food in the fridge. Transparent materials make it easy to see the food kept in them.
The number of partitions inside the rotating organizer can be changed according to one's needs. The sizes of these organizers can be customized to fit different sizes of refrigerators.

CUREA team at Mount Wilson Observatory
Solar Spectrum with Na absorbtion lines

Performed solar pressure broadening at Snow Solar Telescope; observed star clusters and nebulae using 100” and 60” telescopes; completed stellar spectroscopy; was the only selected student from India at the international level. These telescopes were used by Edwin Hubble to discover the expansion of the universe, Albert Einstein confirmed these results by making observations through the 100" telescope.
Also, I am thankful to Dr. Suresh Doravari for giving me a chance to visit Caltech LIGO during this summer program and meet Dr. Rana Adhikari. Along with the old telescopes at Mount Wilson Observatory and Griffith Observatory, I got to visit Chara Ray Observatory.

Our project received funding from the Mechanical department due to its innovative applications and won the consolation prize in the inter-collegiate project competition.
